JADE KELLY
WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
Because it makes me happy and I’m good at it! Like most people my age I first got on a sewing machine about age 11 due to school lessons, and I instantly got a good flow with all things textiles. I studied it for gcse and a level and it was always my highest grade but I was dead set on studying biological anthropology or marine biology at uni. I love my science, but I wasn’t very good at it lol. So I last minute changed my uni studies to textile design and I’m so fucking glad I did. My parents are both very left brain, numbers, logistics, so I guess I wanted to do right and be an academic. I do what I do because it’s what I’m meant to do.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Happiness inspires me. We spend our whole lives working. So to me, I want to be so insanely happy when I’m working as that’s where most of my energy is spent. I work hard, getting up at 5am most mornings to get 3 hours of sewing in before work and then carry on in the evening, and I do it because I want to get to a point in my life where my days are free, flexible, with my cat and plants just making stuff. If I’m doing that and am earning a comfortable wage where I always have a family size Tropicana in the fridge and my future kids have the ability to study/explore what ever they want, then I’d be really, really happy.
IF YOU COULD HAVE MADE ANY ITEM OF CLOTHING/ ACCESSORY BY ANY BRAND WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Oooo this is tough!! There’s so many cool things out there. It’s not a brand, but I think it would have to be either the rework Patagonia chair or umbrella by @nicolemclaughlin.
IF YOU HAD FULL CREATIVE REIGN AND UNLIMITED BUDGET WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE?
I know exactly what I would make but whilst I might not have the budget right now I definitely will some day so I’m gonna keep it a secret…
AND WHAT WE ALL WANT TO KNOW, WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLANT YOU HAVE?
I have a few faves so this is hard but if I had to pick it would have to be my silver ann pothos (scindapsus pictus if yo’ ass fancy). His leaves are metallic/glittery silver, he’s a trailing plant and has grown over 6 feet since I got him. He’s really easy to propagate which means I’m growing new versions of him from offcuts of his leaves. He’s a king.
